Very nearly 50 years passed by before this new tune arrived at Havana. There, salsa assimilated impacts from other neighborhood Cuban music and from American jazz and kept on developing. Because of the Revolution in Cuba, numerous performers moved to the United States, particularly to New York City.

Among the Hispanic people group, these artists found a perfect situation to form their beat into what we know as salsa today; this was particularly evident in ”El Barrio”, otherwise called Spanish Harlem. With time its popularity kept on increasing and today Salsa is considered one of the most acknowledged dances across the globe.

How to Dance on Salsa

Those who want to know about Salsa Dance in detail for better understanding, let’s get along on how to dance on Salsa. Once you know the importance of timing, nothing can stop you from becoming an expert. Do you remember the last time when you went on the floor along with your pattern, and you missed the beat? You didn’t have any clue what to do next, standing there with embarrassment.

To save yourself from that embarrassment, try to focus on the beat timings in order to never lose the beat in the future. Let me assist you in sorting out the timings through this article that you badly need to become the master. If you were taught music in school or if you are from a musical background, it is the primary advantage you got because you already know the basics of it. Music is an art that can be adopted by anyone even without the musical background, with a lot of practice and consistency. Let’s start with the scratch.

Salsa Music Theory

1- Tempo

Music is dependent on time. Those who know how to dance on the beats on perfect time are the winners. The tempo is an Italian word that is referred to as ‘timings.’ A rule of music states that the fastest the music, the higher the tempo. On the other hand, the slower the music, the slower the pace. At a slow tempo, it becomes easy for a person to perform. Usually, hip hop music has a slow tempo. The next time when you are not sure on which music you need to slow down your tempo, always remember this rule. It will help you out to sort the timings. If the music speed is strolling, it becomes quite easy for you to sing along with the music.

2- Beats and Bars

So once you are capable of understanding ‘tempo,’ let’s proceed to Beats and Bars. The term ‘Bar’ is termed as a number of beats that are being repeated again and again in music to form an ultimate rhythm. Usually a bar made of 4 beats while each beat comprises of the same length. In Music, there is a term used ‘4 to the Floor’ that actually means performing on 4 beats on the floor. Though there are many alternatives to ‘4 beats on the floor’ yet it is the most common one.

3- The Salsa Rythm

The Salsa consists of 2 bars, which means 8 beats as it is a couple dance, so it comprises 2 rounds. In the first round, a man comes forward, and the woman stays behind. In the second round, a woman comes forward, and the man stays behind. Later both return to the starting position. It is the simple step to be performed in Salsa that is called ‘mambo Break.’

We dance on 2 bars of Salsa, so we do numbering from one to eight, missing out the 4 and 8. We hop on the first three beats while on 4th beat we take a pause and then continue from 5th beat till 7th beat as on 8th beat we again take a break. That’s why the instructor always does counting like 123…..567.

Now the question arises: what to do when you are unable to hear the beat properly? If you suffer from this issue, don’t worry and don’t lose hope. Having a partner dance is always challenging because you have to get along with them on every step. Listening to Salsa music and dancing in front of the mirror as homework can help you out in sorting the beat timings.

4- Dance Timing Rules

Musical expressions will, in general, start close by the one. Tune in to the bass. Would you be able to hear a rehashing design in the bass-line? Frequently the bass will cover the bars of music. However, you ought to get a feeling that another piece of music is starting every eight beats. Have a go at including in your mind – would you be able to hear anything in the music that begins simultaneously as something different? Let’s look at a portion of the components in a track all the more intently. Listen to the vocals. In case you’re lost, vocals will continue in general, beginning on the main beat (the one). If they don’t start the one, they have something in them that accentuates the one in the music.

5- How to practice Timings

If you are just a beginner, don’t be in a hurry as it takes time to learn new skills. With time to practice, you can have a firm grip on it. Salsa is often distorted as ‘Half the BMP.’ Start doing workout on all the current pop music as it will assist in having a secure grip in Salsa dance. Keep on listening to Salsa music whenever you find time from your schedule, as you will make yourself familiar with the music and beats used in it.

Every move that is being performed in this dance comprises a specific time, and every instructor should tell you about the timings as we do to our students. At 1,2 and 3 beats, a man gives you enough time to prepare yourself while at 4 there is a long break, so you have enough time to prepare yourself for the 5,6 and 7th step.

When the instructor counts, it is okay to sing along as it will let you learn dance steps efficiently. These days Salsa is enriched with a Jazz influence, which is considered one of the hardest to learn, so if you are in the learning process, then always go for the easiest one.

Dance Practice Tools

Various apps are being utilized by dance lovers who want to practice more and more. If you’re going to stick to only Salsa Dance, you can install ‘Dancetime Salsa’ in your iPhone and Ipad, where its tempo is fully adjusted to make things easy for you. It also has a counting feature where you can keep the record of the number of beats. It is one of the best apps with the help of which you can improve your timings because dance is all about proper timings. Always remember that practice makes a man perfect in every skill or field.
