You’ve been taking a dance class, be it Salsa or Bachata or any other dance class, and you love what you’re learning BUT you want to put your own spin or add you’re own flare to it. You feel stuck and unsure how to move forward. You’re inspired and want to dance your own creative style utilising what you learned from your instructor.
Here are a few tips on what you can do to add that extra spark what you learned:
Be sure to really know the technical dance moves well. In your dance class you learn a pattern. The pattern is only a series of moves that has been organised in a particular order for that specific class. Well, why not change it up? For example, perhaps you learned the following pattern in your salsa class; one basic, one cross body lead, one around the world and he turns, she turns. Four different moves. Once you feel you are comfortable enough with that pattern why not change those exact four moves around in a different order? Experiment a bit. Play with it.
Break down the moves slowly. I mean really slow. Anyone can turn or do moves fast, but sometimes that’s can look sloppy. Spend some time to focus on the core of the moves. Take it nice and slow. No need to rush. The only person you are competing against is yourself.
Practice, practice, practice. I can’t stress this enough! The best way to master anything is to PRACTICE! Get to the point where you’re comfortable doing the moves slowly. Once you’re there, and you’ll know when you are, bring the speed up to match the music or rhythm of the song. If in all of your practice, you still find that something doesn’t feel right or if you still feel stuck, just ask your instructor the next time you see them.
Your instructor is one of the best resources to further your development in skills and style!
